New London Coast Guard Summer Exhibit

Friday, June 5, 2015 – Saturday, August 29, 2015

Studio 33 Art & Frame Gallery of 140 Bank Street, New London, CT presents the New London Coast Guard Summer Exhibit. Submissions will visually speak to one or all historic eras of the 225 year old service, The Revenue Cutter Service, The Lifesaving Service, and today’s United States Coast Guard, it’s beginnings in 1790, through it’s evolution over two centuries, safeguarding our nation’s maritime interests and environment, providing a presence along our rivers, ports, and on the high seas around the globe. A non-juried exhibit including any relative subject matter, any media. Work must be suitably framed, with wire for hanging; no clips or saw tooth hangers. Sculpture must be easily transportable, no more than 35 pounds. Artists may submit three pieces per month for this evolving three month exhibit, work may remain for the duration or be changed 2 days prior to scheduled receptions. A portion of the proceeds from Studio 33 Art & Frame Gallery’s 30% commission from sales will be donated to the National Coast Guard Museum slated to open in 2017. Suggestions for artwork we would like to see represented in the exhibit and key dates in USCG history:

  • Cutters, Lifeboats, Utility Boats, Icebreakers, Buoy Tenders, Tugs, Aircraft
  • Historic figures, Alexander Hamilton, Hopley Yeaton, Russell Randolph Waesche, Frederick C.Billard, Douglas Munro, Bernie Webber, Ellsworth P. Bertholf, Spars
  • Search and Rescue
  • Ice operations
  • Lighthouses, Lighthouse Tenders, Lightships, Lifesaving Stations
  • Rum running/Maritime law enforcement
  • Marine safety and Maritime security
  • Marine Environmental Protection/Living Marine Resources
  • 1790: Revenue-Marine, created within the Treasury Department
  • 1789 U.S. Lighthouse Service
  • 1838 Steamboat Inspection Service
  • 1848 U.S. Lifesaving Service
  • 1915: Revenue Cutter Service combines with U.S. Lifesaving Service to create USCG
  • 1939: U.S. Lighthouse Service added
  • 1946: Steamboat Inspection Service added
  • 1967: Coast Guard transferred to Department of Transportation
  • 2003: Coast Guard transferred to Department of Homeland Security
